Fake parcel texts: how to spot the scam

A message says your parcel is stuck or that you owe a fee? Here is how to check in a minute, and what to do if you have already clicked.

Short answer

Do not tap the link. Open the carrier's website or app yourself and enter your tracking number: if the tracking shows no problem, the message is suspicious. Forward the text to 33700, a free service. If you gave your card details, have your card blocked by your bank straight away (cybermalveillance.gouv.fr).

How to spot a fake delivery message

The message poses as a carrier and leads to a fake website that asks for your identity, your contact details and above all your bank card (cybermalveillance.gouv.fr). Four signs should alert you:

  • The message is unexpected, urgent, or threatens not to deliver the parcel.
  • It asks you to pay a fee to receive a parcel.
  • The text comes from a French mobile number starting with 06 or 07.
  • The official tracking shows no problem with the parcel.

Can a carrier ask you to pay by text?

La Poste says it never sends a payment request linked to a delivery by message. It adds one exception: it may contact you in certain cases, such as customs duties or insufficient postage. If in doubt, check the status of the item on its official website (La Poste).

Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr also reports that Mondial Relay never asks for additional fees, and that Chronopost asks for neither an identity document nor delivery fees for deliveries in France (cybermalveillance.gouv.fr).

Check without clicking

  1. Do not touch the link or the attachment, and do not reply.
  2. Find the tracking number in your order, not in the suspicious message.
  3. Enter it on our tracking page, which opens the official tracking, or type the carrier's address yourself.
  4. If in doubt, contact the carrier through its official website.

You clicked or paid: what to do

You only clicked

  • Look at the website address: it may differ from the real one by a single character. If in doubt, enter nothing and close the page.
  • If you entered a password, change it, and change it everywhere you used the same one.
  • Keep the message as evidence.
  • If you installed an app, see the advice on malicious texts, in French.

You gave your card details or saw a payment

  1. Have your card blocked immediately by your bank.
  2. Keep the evidence: message, number, screenshots, website address.
  3. Report fraudulent payments on the Perceval platform. This report does not replace a police complaint (cybermalveillance.gouv.fr).
  4. File a complaint at a police or gendarmerie station, or in writing to the public prosecutor. France Victimes gives free support on 116 006.
  5. Ask your bank for a refund. It may require the complaint or the Perceval receipt.
  6. For advice: Info Escroqueries, 0 805 805 817, free call, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6:30pm.

What if your parcel really has a problem?

Real delays happen too. Always start from the official tracking, then read what to do if the parcel cannot be found or if the pickup point is closed. For the collection code, see collecting a parcel from a pickup point.

You ordered from a real seller and the parcel does not arrive? Settle the dispute with the seller. SignalConso, a free public service, lets you report a problem with a company.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay to receive a parcel at a pickup point?

A message demanding a fee to receive a parcel is suspicious. La Poste says it never sends this kind of request by message, except in particular cases such as customs duties, which you should check on its website (La Poste).

I got a parcel text but I am not expecting anything. What should I do?

Do not click, forward the message to 33700 and delete it. An unexpected message is one of the warning signs.

Is 33700 free?

Yes, it is a free service. It gets the sender blocked (cybermalveillance.gouv.fr).

A courier asks me for a code I received by text. Is that normal?

Be careful. Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr describes a fake courier who phones to obtain a code received by text, with purchases then billed to your phone line (source). Do not give it over the phone, and check the tracking yourself.

Does Relais autour de moi send delivery texts?

No. We do not deliver any parcels and we are not the carriers' customer service.
